Sales and Use Tax

Businesses are responsible for collecting and remitting sales tax for the online sale of goods in some states. There are over 350 different tax jurisdictions in Washington State alone, one of nine-states that have specific legislation addressing the tax requirements for software and content delivered on-line. In addition, the Marketplace Fairness Act of 2013 passed in the US Senate on May 6, 2013. The bill grants states the authority to require certain remote sellers (i.e. businesses that sell goods and services via the internet, mail-order catalogs, telephone, etc.) to collect sales tax. The Obama administration has indicated it will support the bill if it clears the House.
